The family of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old fatally shot by police in Akron, Ohio in June 2022, has reached a $4.85 million settlement with the city of Akron in a federal lawsuit over Walker’s death.

Taxpayers, not an insurance agency, will pay for the city of Akron's $4.85 million settlement to Jayland Walker's family for Walker's police-involved shooting death, Akron Mayor Shammas Malik. The city is not insured, so the settlement will come in a series of four payments over four years, he said.

In a landmark decision, the city of Akron will pay $4.8 million to the family of Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man who was gunned down in a barrage of 94 bullets by police officers during a chaotic chase in June 2022.

The City of Akron will pay the family of Jayland Walker $4.85 million in the federal lawsuit that sought $45 million in damages for Walker's death.

Walker's family sued the city in 2023, initially requesting $45 million. The $4.85 million will be paid in four installments over the next four years, according to a Monday news release.
