An effort to drop Chicago’s citywide speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph advanced in the City Council Monday. The legislation aimed at reducing traffic crashes and fatalities passed in an 8-to-5 vote in the Pedestrian and Traffic Safety committee.

A handful of aldermen objected to lowering speed limits across the city, suggesting Chicago take a more targeted approach to lowering driving speeds by neighborhood.

The matter won't get a City Council vote for weeks. The committee also passed a measure to introduce a public enforcement pilot program that would issue tickets based on residents' photos of scofflaws parked in bike lanes.
