Today, Mercedes-Benz opened its first battery-recycling plant in Germany. The new plant will use an "integrated mechanical-hydrometallurgical" approach to recycling electric vehicle batteries and expects to recover more than 96 percent of the valuable minerals and metals used in EV batteries.

The hydrometallurgical process is also said to be less energy intensive compared to the established pyrometallurgy system in Europe. As with all Mercedes-Benz production sites, the recycling plant operates in a net carbon-neutral manner, aided by 100% green electricity and solar panels on the roof area of the 6,800m2 building.

Mercedes-Benz has invested tens of millions of euros in the new plant and says it will be able to recycle more than 96 per cent of battery materials.
