Moldova's referendum on joining the EU, which took place alongside elections in the country, occurred under "unprecedented interference" by Russia and its proxies, European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano said.

Electoral data shows that Moldovans have voted by a razor-thin majority in favor of securing the country’s path toward European Union membership.

Modlova – a former Soviet state – applied to join the EU after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, but Russia is reluctant to let it go as it sits in a strategic position between Ukraine and the Black Sea.
