The Met Office has issued a 12-hour yellow alert for thunderstorms in five UK regions - with a high chance of power cuts in affected areas.

A thunderstorm warning has been issued by the Met Office for large parts of Gloucestershire today (Tuesday, October 8). It came into force at 10am and runs until 10pm, with people told they could face heavy showers, lightning and travel disruption.

A weather warning for rain has been issued by the Met Office as some parts of the UK were hit by torrential rain on Monday night. The yellow weather alert for eastern England lasts until Tuesday at 3am and warns of heavy rain that could cause flooding and disruption.

Flooding, travel disruption and power cuts may be on the cards this evening due to the conditions, forecasters have said. Up to 40mm of rain could fall in the space of a few hours in some regions.
